It's bad enuf that the anchors and reporters and pundits are so ignorant but HOW can their editors be so ignorant as well! It's shameful!: trying to make Americans feel guilty because most understand and know we cannot and never have had open borders and have a tradition of opening our arms to poor uneducated huddled masses. Totally untrue! Again -- It's a POEM!!! NOT policy - not ever.
That poem on the Statue of Liberty was written by a wealthy Jewish woman from Manhatten as a fund-raiser for the French statue. The "huddled masses yearning to be free" bit she wrote, was referring to Eastern European Jews - millions of what I call "fiddler on the roof Jews", mainly uneducated rural peasants from small Jewish orthodox villages. She certainly was not writing about immigrants from Africa, Asia, the Middle East or even Southern Italians and Latin Americans.
In fact, the huge surge of largely unknown unvetted refugees and immigrants from 1880-1920 led to our first comprehensive and highly restrictive immigration law: the National Origins Act of 1923. It was in effect all during the war where we certainly were not open to refugees (even turned back shiploads of Jewish refugees, some to be slaughtered in the Holocaust) . The law lasted until civil rights was passed in 1964 that forbade discrimination on the basis of national origin. We HAD to change our immigration law then because our entire immigration policy was founded on quotas based on national origins. (read my new book for more info: "the Law That Changed the Face of America").
